General AC servicing

What’s Actually Included in General AC Servicing?

While most households have AC units, many homeowners don’t know what standard general AC servicing includes.

In some cases, it’s not clear if general servicing entails the technician cleaning all parts and performing chemical washing.

Therefore, in this post, we will discuss exactly what is included in general aircon servicing and, just as importantly, what is not.

What’s Included in General AC Servicing

1. Cleaning Filters and Panels

Technicians remove and clean the air filters, which collect dust over time. The aircon technicians wash the filters with mild soap, wipe the front panel and vents, and dry all parts before reinstalling.

The cleaning enables them to remove all the dust, ensure the air flows properly, and ensure the air conditioner functions effectively.

2. Clean the Evaporator Coils

The technician cleans the evaporator coils with a coil cleaner, then rinses them with water to remove dust and moisture buildup.

During cleaning, they also clear any drain-hose blockages caused by algae or debris. Importantly, if they notice corrosion or ice formation, it signals leaks or airflow issues which necessitates further investigations.

3. Drainage Check

The air con servicing technician inspects the drainage system and drainpipe to check the flow. If blocked, they clear it with a vacuum or pump.

They check the drain pan for water or rust to prevent water leaks and stains.

4. Outdoor Unit Inspection

During the general service, the technician inspects the outdoor compressor. They remove debris, straighten the fins, and listen for unusual noises.

They also check the refrigerant pipes, which may appear oily when leaking, for signs of leaks. Importantly, while general servicing does not include refilling the refrigerant, which is the cooling fluid in the system, technicians can flag potential issues for further action.

5. Electrical and Performance Checks

The technician checks and tightens electrical connections, and tests the thermostat and remote control.

Also, they test fan speed and swing to ensure efficient performance and reduce the risk of breakdown.

6. Final Test

After completing all servicing tasks and returning everything to the right place, the technician runs the air conditioner for at least 15 minutes to test that it produces no odd sounds and runs smoothly.

What’s Not Included in General Servicing

General servicing does not cover chemical overhaul, refrigerant top-ups, or parts replacement.

Also, it does not include repairs to insulation or trunking. Therefore, you must pay extra for these services, especially if your air conditioning unit has developed issues, such as not cooling efficiently, or if it does not improve its performance after general servicing.

Why Regular Servicing Matters in Singapore

With year-round high humidity, air conditioners in Singapore battle mold, algae, and dirt. That’s why air conditioning professionals recommend that you service your unit at least every three to four months.

Regular maintenance primarily improves cooling efficiency, saves energy, extends your system’s lifespan, and ensures cleaner air in your home.

Conclusion

Mainly, general AC servicing entails the above essential services including regular inspection, cleaning, and inspection of filters, coils, drain lines, and electrical components. Importantly, while general AC servicing does not include repair services, it’s essential for preventing the most common air conditioner issues.

Therefore, to ensure AC efficiency year-round, you should opt for scheduled routine servicing as a more cost-effective way to maintain your AC unit than waiting for a major breakdown.

Lastly, when dealing with an air conditioning servicing company, don’t hesitate to request a detailed aircon servicing checklist that lists all servicing tasks during the visit. This way, you can verify the work and know exactly what you’re paying for.
